Propecia is the first FDA approved pill used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head). How Propecia Works
Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss. Propecia is an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat BPH, (enlarged prostate). The recommended dose for BPH is 5 mg once daily.Your doctor may prescribe this medicine for other conditions as well.

How to Take Propecia
Propecia is usually taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. If you take propecia without food, take each dose with a full glass of water. This medicine may be crushed if needed to swallow. It is important to take Propecia regularly to get the most benefit and it should be taken at the same time everyday. Possible Propecia Side Effects

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Propecia and you remember the same day, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Propecia Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Pregnancy & Nursing
Propecia is intended for male use only and is not indicated for use by women. Propecia, which contains Finasteride should not be used in pediatric patients. Propecia is in the FDA pregnancy category X, which means that it is known to cause birth defects in the developing baby. Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets. The medication could be absorbed through the skin. If you are pregnant and have come in contact with broken tablets, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Exposure to whole tablets should be avoided whenever possible however exposure to whole tablets is not expected to be harmful as long as the tablets are not swallowed. It is not known whether Propecia passes into breast milk.

If using Propecia for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out. Your doctor may perform blood tests or other forms of monitoring during treatment with Propecia.
